Saying “you’re fired” may actually be an indicator of management failure, even though it has been popularised in the media.

This course looks at the three key areas, namely recruitment & induction, performance management and improvement, which if applied correctly, should minimise the need to consider terminating employment. However, the third key area is the effective use of the disciplinary procedure to formally improve performance standards, and only if that does not work, how best to dismiss.

We have designed this course to suit those who are new to Management, as well as being a useful refresher for the more experienced Manager looking to develop existing skills and/or want to be more successful by learning new/different approaches, as part of personal/career development.

This course will be highly participative, practical in content, and is intended to challenge our delegates into recognising there are always alternative ways of dealing with people and/or situations.

The course objectives will include: -

    • Recruitment & Induction
    • Performance Management
    • Performance Improvement
    • Discipline, Dismissal & Alternatives
    • Practical Learning Opportunities

The course will commence at 8.30 am, with registration and refreshments from 8.00 am. The course will finish around 1.45 pm, with breaks for refreshments and lunch.

The cost for this training event will be £75.00 plus VAT per delegate, including lunch.  To reserve your place on this course, please contact Jackie Bolton either by e-mail: jackie@www.backuphr.com or call 01480 677981.

We will cover what is really meant by regular and open two-way communication skills, influencing skills (including bosses), managing boundaries and tips on how to deal with difficult situations and people (conflict resolution).

All of this will promote productivity, success and enhance well-being in the working environment.

Immigration and Employment are very current and related hot topics. BackupHR and DavidsonMorris Solicitors are joining forces to discuss the impact of Brexit on your ability to retain and recruit EU nationals, as well as looking at the wider immigration landscape for employing non-UK nationals. We will focus on how you can assist your affected workforce (and their families), so that the Organisation and employees are ready for when the final proposals are agreed and enforced.

Immigration rules are complex and subject to frequent amendment. However, there are immigration provisions which you can use, especially lesser known immigration rules and proposed changes to the law, which could have a positive impact on retaining and recruiting your workforce.

We will also provide some practical guidance on the related employment issues and documentation that you also need to consider in a rapidly changing environment, and the costs/penalties for getting it wrong.

We are delighted that our keynote speaker is Anne Morris, a leading immigration lawyer. Anne will provide genuine insight into this complicated area of law, as well as offering real solutions on what to do. This seminar will be very engaging, and we encourage you to bring along your questions.

Many Managers are prone not to look beyond an income stream as to the reason why people come to work. Whilst pay is important, social interaction, job satisfaction and recognition are other key motivators.

Whilst this course will look at effective methods to help control absence, we will also be encouraging Managers to better understand the root causes behind why people do not turn up for work.

Course content will include the dangers of presenteeism, the benefits of return to work meetings, and the importance of focusing on small scale, but high impact well-being initiatives, seeing as mental health and stress combined is the number one reason why people are off sick.

If absenteeism is a problem at work, and/or you are looking for some simple, yet practical tips on dealing with mental health issues, and improving well-being amongst your people, then this course is a must for you.

Dismissing staff can have serious implications if done badly.  The law requires that you have a fair reason for dismissal (e.g. restructuring is not necessarily redundancy) and that you follow fair processes.

This course will cover the differences between a fair and unfair dismissal; why following the ACAS code and internal procedures is essential; and the key practical issues to consider when dealing with discipline, dismissal and redundancy processes.  The aim of the course is to encourage delegates to follow proper procedures and apply sound judgement.

We have designed the course to suit those who are new to Management, as well as being a worthwhile refresher for the experienced Manager looking to enhance their existing skills, and wants to be more successful by learning new/different approaches.

In between the worsening pandemic and the chaos created by Brexit negotiations before Christmas, the Government slipped through a very detailed, 45 page document regarding the right to work in the UK.

Most employers should already be carrying out these checks, but it has become much more important since our exit from the European Union, as European citizens no longer have an automatic right to work in the UK. Especially if they were not living here before the end of last year.

In our first Coronavirus webinar this year, nearly 75% of you voted for an extended Right to Work Checks webinar.

    We will cover:

    • The new system
    • EU citizens
    • Pre-settled status
    • Non-UK nationals
    • Manual, online and remote checks
    • and more...

Please note, this is not an immigration webinar, though we touch on some of the principles, it is designed to allow employers to carry out the right checks to ensure they do not incur penalties.

As the Government announces it is on track for a complete relaxation of the rules for 19 July, we look back at the last 18 months and asked what has changed in the employment relationship during that time.

There have been a number of important changes to the law, both through legislation and case law. Brexit has meant a fundamental change to our relationship with the EU, and with EU workers.

And with a nervous nation returning to the workplace, there is far greater awareness of health and safety protocols, risk assessments and safe ways of working. How can employers ensure they do the right thing, while protecting themselves and their workforce?

    This  free course will cover:

    • What workers and employers really think?
    • New legislation
    • New case law
    • Health and safety
    • Return to the workplace
    • ...... plus others

Led by Guy Liddall, with in-depth analysis from Cathy Norton and Peter Stanway, these two one hour sessions will be time well spent.

Many organisations have noticed a significant skills shortage, so it is not so easy to recruit replacement staff as it was.  This means it is important to get the best out of your existing staff.  Many employers only use the disciplinary procedure when they are actively looking to remove staff rather than recognising that it is a tried and tested formal performance management system, which if done correctly, can correct behaviours and reduce the need to dismiss employees.

Managers are often very reluctant to use the disciplinary procedure because they have not been trained in how the procedure can work for them.   Instead, Managers avoid using the disciplinary procedure because they are aware that dismissing staff can have serious implications if done badly.

We will also discuss the importance of dealing effectively with new starters and those with less than two years’ service in the event they are not meeting expectations, and how they can be departed safely using a shorter but fair process.

This practical, interactive half-day course will provide you with tips and tools on addressing these and other issues to help increase attendance and drive down costs.   We have designed the course to suit those who are new to Management, as well as being worthwhile for the experienced Manager or HR professional looking to enhance their knowledge and increase their practical skills.

You are only as good as the people you manage - if you do not manage them effectively, this will not reflect well on you.

Many Managers are promoted to a role that involves being in charge of people - the promotion is often based on their technical/operational expertise.  Yet, to successfully manage individuals or a team requires a different set of skills and techniques.  Even Senior Managers may never have had formal training on the best ways to lead and manage people.  All Managers need to keep up to date with the evolving principles of motivating and engaging the different generations of people they are responsible for in the modern workplace. It is about continuous professional development if you are a Manager.

This course focuses on the key aspects of successful people management, including effective communication skills; practical motivation and engagement; the ability to develop individuals and also teams; and finally, knowing your own default management style and when you may need to change/modify it.

We have designed this course to suit those who are new to Management, as well as being a useful refresher for the more experienced Manager looking to develop existing skills and/or want to be more successful by learning new/different approaches, as part of personal/career development.

The course will commence at 8.30 am, with registration and refreshments from 8.00 am, and will finish around 1.45 pm to 2.00 pm, with breaks for refreshments and lunch.
