0 – 60mph in 6 Months – Getting Newcomers up to Speed

Newmarket – 28th February; Norwich – 27th April

The first few days, weeks and months for a new starter are critical in determining whether they develop effectively, and quickly become either an asset or a liability. In reality, little time, effort and thought is really given to planning and achieving a meaningful, structured programme of learning, which means that people do not work to their full potential as quickly as they could have, or they leave. This course will encourage Managers to better prepare and conduct good inductions, and to regularly assess and feedback how a new employee is performing, so that they can become really productive in their jobs by the end of any probationary period.

Key Survival Skills for the Modern Workplace

Newmarket – 16th May; Norwich – 17th October

This half-day course will look specifically at some of the common work stressors, with a view to learning effective approaches, including meeting your boss’ expectations, knowing when and how to stand up for yourself, developing resilience, whilst juggling work and personal demands.  This will suit anyone who wants to have a better understanding of survival strategies and skills.  This will also aid personal and career development, as being able to adapt quickly is more than just the key to survival, but to success itself.

Good Ways to Deliver Bad News

Newmarket – 11th October; Norwich – 30th November

No-one likes to deliver bad news, but every Manager has to do this at some stage. If it is done effectively, the outcome can be more constructive than if it is done badly, or not at all. We will identify useful approaches and techniques that will help Managers to be more confident and purposeful, by practising how to do it in a supportive and safe environment. Delivering bad news without proper preparation can be stressful to all concerned, so come to learn how to be more comfortable dealing with this part of a Manager’s job

Rowley Mile Conference Centre, Newmarket – 8th November 2016
Orton Hall Hotel, Peterborough – 16th November 2016 – CANCELLED
Park Farm Country Hotel, Norwich – 24th November 2016

An ACAS report identifies seven levers for workplace productivity. We will look at practical steps that Managers can take to get the best out of their employees by focusing on four of the seven levers.  We will also give our own take on productivity using the three “R”s, namely Reward, Responsibility and Respect. Managers succeed by having highly productive teams.  Traditional approaches have invariably been focused on time management and working people harder, over longer hours.  The modern Manager knows that a productive team depends far more on job design and communication, whilst recognising that issues of trust and fairness are equally as important.

This course will identify some of the key elements that all Managers should be aware of if they wish to manage their teams more effectively, thereby enhancing the organisation’s performance/prosperity, and their reputation as a key performer.

The course objectives will include: –

  • Defining Productivity
  • Well-Designed Work
  • How Fairness Contributes
  • Employee Voice
  • The Value of Trust
  • Well-Being – Another Aspect of Productivity

The course will commence at 8.45 am, with registration and refreshments from 8.00 am. The course will finish around 3.00 pm, with breaks for refreshments and lunch.

WHY IDENTIFY AND RETAIN KEY STAFF?
Newmarket – 8th November; Peterborough – 16th November; Norwich – 24th November

It can cost as much as £30,000 per employee to replace members of staff, says Oxford Economics, because of a combination of lost output and the cost of recruiting and absorbing a new employee to get them up to speed. Add to that the recent CIPD survey which indicates four fifths of organisations feel competition for staff had increased, with three quarters reporting recruitment difficulties, i.e. lack of skills. This makes identifying and retaining key staff crucial to an organisation’s success but do you really know who your key staff truly are? This course will look at the techniques and policies you need to implement, to ensure that you do not lose business critical employees. This includes how to assess your workforce, considering reward strategies, employee engagement initiatives and succession planning.

What are the pitfalls of not having contractual documentation? Do employees seem to know more about their rights than you do? Do you know what are the most important employment procedures are and why? BackupHR recognises that many organisations employ people “on the hoof” and only issue them with a brief offer letter, having all good intentions of following up at a later stage but never do. Getting it wrong or having nothing could give rise to a claim. For an organisation this could potentially mean having to put your business on hold, not only in terms of finances but also management focus.

Providing the legal basics about employment contracts; their purpose and content, as well as also identifying the key employment policies and procedures that should not only be clearly written and communicated out, but that Managers need to follow in practice. By attending this half day course, you will be given practical tips on what needs to be in place and why. We will explain why handbooks are a necessary evil and why they need to get reviewed and updated each year.

This will bring you up to speed on everything you need to know about employment policies, procedures and contracts, as well as understanding the importance of having detailed records.

Who should attend?

Directors and/or Business Owners who employ staff, as well as Managers who have responsibility for managing people. It is also a useful refresher for anyone who has HR responsibility.

What will the course cover?
  • Legal Considerations
  • Contractual Documentation
  • Policies and Procedures
  • Consultation and Implementation
  • Making Changes

Included will be a number of exercises and/or case studies that will allow you to put into practice many of the points covered off during the course, within group interactive sessions.

GOODBYE & HELLO

Guide to the Quick Departure of Employees & Better Replacement

The CIPD estimates the average cost of recruiting the wrong person is £8,200.00, rising to £12,000.00 for Senior Managers or Directors.
